1920s ~ The Future
Mr Cheng Keng Kang, a Chinese immigrant who brought his family of 10 here in search of a better life. He made his way across the seas by boat and arrived in Singapore. To Survive, he worked odd jobs and also sold pineapples. Soon, when he began selling snacks and preserved fruits, it proved to be profitable. This led him to start Cheng Yew Heng Candy Factory.
Cheng Yew Heng Candy Factory was founded in 1947 at the end of Upper Serangoon Road. It producing snacks and preserved fruits. Cheng Yew Heng is not the founder’s name. It has a meaning behind. The name was chosen because in chinese, broken down individually which means Cheng (Zhong) represent the Cheng family surname, Yew (You) refers to friendship and Heng (Xing) means flourish and happiness. Due to competition from China, the founder along with his son, Cheng Ngee Chuan, began producing rock sugar, red and black sugar.
In 1996, Cheng Liang Chye (eldest son) started working as manager at Cheng Yew Heng Candy Factory. With the modern ideals, he privatized the company with the blessing of his father. In 1999, Liang Chye went on to setup and manage SMC food 21 Pte ltd. In 2000, Mr. Cheng Liang Kheng (second son), entered the business as Managing Director at Cheng Yew Heng Candy Factory. His previous experience as a general manager helped expand the international trading business. In 2008, the youngest son left his banking job and joined the company to help out in his family’s 74 year old traditional sugar-making business just when their father’s health started to turn worst.
Cheng Yew Heng’s brand truly reflects its tradition and heritage and promise of quality. The company is a strong player in soft commodity arena, trading and has distribution networks around the world. It is then re-inventing new products like Jewels as well as other products to cater to new markets and lifestyle. Cheng Yew Heng’s future is about sustainability: collaborating and generating new ideas. In 2017, Cheng Yew Heng newly redeveloped factory that will house Singapore’s 1st Food facility incubator, education & innovation centre, integrated facility and collaborative R&D centre.
